The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend
Santat, D. (2019). The adventures of beekle: The unimaginary friend. Little, Brown and Company.
Plot Summary:
Beekle was born on a faraway island where all the imaginary creatures lived and played before they were imagined by a real child. Beekle had waited and waited to be picked by a child to become their imaginary friend, imagining their time together filled with fun, but he got tired of waiting and decided to said away from the island to the real world. Soon, Beekle learned that the real world isn't full of fun and games and music and joy, but not enjoying things like cake and music and needing too many naps. Beekle then found a bright playground filled with kids and imaginary friends, so he looked around for his very own friend, but could find them, so he decided to climb up a tree and wait for them, but nobody came. Beekle became sad over not having a friend when a little girl called out to him. They were both shy at first, but immediately made a connection and became best of friends, sharing snacks, telling jokes, playing, and drawing together. Beekle and the little girl named Alice were now best friends who do the unimaginable together.

Personal Connection:
I absolutely love this book from the actual storyline to the illustrations to the emotion to the characters, everything about this book is in my heart. I never had an imaginary friend growing up, but I was a shy kid who had so much trouble making friends, I would only play with my cousin, who was conveniently in the same grade as me. This story portrayed those feelings that I had as a young kid where I was so afraid of making friends yet I didn't want to be alone. I feel like most people go through this, of course, we all do in different ways but this book is a great reference and example of those feelings we feel without a friend. Not only did this book portray those feelings of being alone and wanting a friend, but it also did a good job at showing what it was like to have one. I feel like if I had this book growing up, I might've stepped out of my shell a bit sooner, or maybe not have been so scared, so I would love to provide it for future students, maybe it will help them!

Classroom Connection:
I like the idea of having an activity where the students can draw their own imaginary friend, giving them a name and a personality. They can create someone special to think and use their imagination, creative thinking, and creative writing while doing so. Another activity to go along with creating their own imaginary friend could be introducing them to their peers. They could show their friend, share their name and some facts and then listen to each other, getting a chance to do a presentation without the stress of a big assignment, but a fun one. Another fun activity that could tap more into creative writing would be to have students write a story of themselves and their friend, something they can make up and use themselves as a character. We could even turn these stories into mini flipbooks and make it a whole writing and art project.
